Harmonic drives

Strain wave transmissions using a flexible toothed component.

Overview

Strain wave gearing uses a wave generator, a flexible spline and a circular spline. Deformation changes which teeth engage, producing relative rotation and a reduction ratio. Harmonic Drive is a commercial name associated with this technology. A robot’s use of a particular transmission must be documented for its joints and generation. The presence of strain wave gearing should not be inferred solely from a joint’s external shape.[1]
